AileyCamp is an innovative six-week summer program designed to engage children ages 11–14. Through disciplined dance training, creative writing instruction, personal development, and communication workshops, campers develop a respect for themselves and others that meaningfully impacts their lives.
Started by Alvin Ailey himself along with the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey in 1989, AileyCamps now operate in 10 cities across the country:
Atlanta, GA; Baltimore, MD; Berkeley/Oakland, CA; Chicago, IL; Kansas City, KS; Kansas City, MO; Miami, FL; Newark, NJ; New York, NY; Seattle, WA; and now DETROIT!
One hundred boys and girls, ages 11-14 currently in grades 6-8 will be selected from applications received. No prior dance training is necessary.
All applicants must be interviewed! You will receive interview information upon completing the application. You will be notified with acceptance information in April 2020. Submitting an application does not guarantee selection.
AileyCamp is six weeks, June 29 through August 8, 2020. Camp starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. These are six action-packed weeks! Campers must attend each day, unless they are ill. Please do not apply if you cannot commit to sending your child each day for the entire six weeks. If you have other plans during the six-week camp session, PLEASE DO NOT APPLY.
AileyCamp is free! Dance attire, transportation, field trips, breakfast, snacks and lunches are provided for campers thanks to generous cash and in-kind donations from corporations, foundations, government agencies, community groups and individuals.
AileyCamp is held at Detroit School of Arts. Students will be transported by school bus to and from designated pickup points. Campers that reside outside district boundaries must arrange their own transportation to and from camp.
