Michigan Opera Theatre Celebrates National Arts in Education Week!
In addition to producing and presenting opera and dance, arts education is a priority for Michigan Opera Theatre and has been since the founding of our Education and Community Programs departments by Karen DiChiera in 1978.
Last year, MOT Education and Community Programs served more than 17,000 people, primarily youth, through touring productions, concerts, workshops, and creative residencies.
This week, we are proud to celebrate National Arts in Education Week and showcase the exciting programs we have coming up this season:
- Page to Stage: Our recently-announced Page to Stage program is a year-long initiative celebrating the literature on which our 2018-19 opera series is based: Eugene Onegin, The Barber of Seville, Candide, Hansel and Gretel and The Grapes of Wrath. Page to Stage creates tailored programs for book clubs, libraries, community group and individuals interested in exploring the source material in more depth.
- Cultural Passport: We are proud to join the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Institute of Arts to participate in the Cultural Passport initiative for students in the Detroit Public Schools Community District. In our role, we will be bringing all district fourth-graders to an opera or dance performance at the Detroit Opera House this season.
- In-School Tours: Bring the opera to you! Our in-school tours bring small, accessible children’s productions to schools to give students an opportunity to experience opera up close. This season, we are offering Jack and the Beanstalk and I, Too, Sing America, as well as an opportunity for students to meet with the singers!
- Dance Education: We offer free master classes ahead of every dance production we present, taught by the professional dancers themselves! Classes are free with corresponding tickets, and students can receive professional-level training from companies like American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey and BalletMet!
We hope you can join us for an exciting season ahead!
