Willie Horton and George Shirley to Give Pre-Opera Talk Opening Night!
We are proud to share that Willie Horton and George Shirley will be part of a special pre-opera panel discussion ahead of the opening of The Summer King Saturday, moderated by Rochelle Riley of the Detroit Free Press! Willie Horton was a part of the World Series-winning Detroit Tigers team, and George Shirley was the first African-American tenor to sing at the Metropolitan Opera. The Summer King composer Daniel Sonenberg will also join in the panel discussion. Join us at 6:30 p.m. before the opera!
Before the talk, Michigan Opera Theatre also invites you to a special block party to celebrate opening night AND the Detroit Tiger’s home game against the Seattle Mariners. From 2-6 p.m., the Detroit Opera House surface parking lot, on the corner of John R. and Madison streets across from Comerica Park, will offer food, music and family-friendly games. The event is free and open to the public and is a great way to celebrate both arts and sports! We hope to see you there!
And make sure to see The Summer King, a new opera about the life of Negro Leagues baseball star Josh Gibson, performing May 12-20 at the Detroit Opera House!
