Dispelling the belief that ballet could not be performed by those of African descent, Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1969. Now, over 40 years later, the work of the Dance Theatre of Harlem has astonished and lifted the spirits of Detroit audiences in regular performances under Michigan Opera Theatre’s auspices. The dynamism and boundless energy and talent of the Dance Theatre of Harlem, straight from the vaunted Apollo Theater in New York, provide a series of performances that promise to dazzle, delight, and produce awe.
